Malta Independent Thursday, 9 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Mr Tonio Fenech, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, has presented a cheque for Lm20,000 – a contribution to the Malta Olympic Committee from the National Lotteries Good Causes Fund.

It was made on the occasion of the participation of the Maltese athletes in the Melbourne Commonwealth Games 2006. The presentation was made to the MOC Vice President, Julian Pace Bonello, who was accompanied by the Secretary General, Joseph Cassar and a number of athletes taking part in these games.

Mr Fenech said that the “National Lotteries Good Causes Fund”, formerly known as “Super 5 Lottery Fund”, has the main scope of helping out various individuals, agencies, or organisations that have a social, cultural, educational, sports, philanthropic or religious background. The Fund generates its income through a percentage contributed from the amount of tax payable from lotteries and games, and unclaimed prizes.

The Parliamentary Secretary said that the contribution made to the Malta Olympic Committee highlights the commitment of the Government towards various sporting activities. Other contributions made recently include Young People’s Unit, Oratorio Don Bosco, Dar Suret il-Bniedem, and Malta Photographic Society.
