Malta Independent Friday, 10 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

In the Major of Mons in Belgium, as usual the top three Maltese players Massimo Cremona, Joseph Mifsud and Hansel Mallia together with Mark Gauci took part in this prestigious event where almost 200 participants took part.

This tournament was well organised by the Belgium club of AS Hennuyer.

On Saturday’s team event Massimo Cremona’s side CS Reggiana made it up to the final but were eventually heavily defeated by Napoli 0-4.

Cremona figured in all his club’s seven matches winning six games before loosing the final game, thus leading his side to the final with his string of wins.

His three wins from the last 16 till the semi final were crucial for his team to pass from one round to the other.

In the last 16, he beat Roufoss 6-3 to enable Reggiana beat Vervier 2-1. In this stage, Mifsud also made his part for Hennuyer to beat Hitdorf 3-1 while Mallia who figured for the 2nd team of Hennuyer helped them reach this stage but they were outstood by Bologna 0-4.

In the quarter final Cremona had to pass from a very tough match to beat Jean Einsle 3-2 which was crucial again for Reggiana to beat host side Hennuyer 2-1.

Also in this game Mifsud was among the ranks of the Belgium side which was on a stalemate 0-0 until the end of the first half before unexpectedly being substituted in the second part of the match.

In the semi final then Cremona beat easily Heider 4-0 to again permit his side Reggiana win again marginally 2-1 against Austrian side Mattesburg and thus gain a place in the final of this prestigious event for the first time ever for CS Reggiana.

But they were defeated by Napoli 0-4 with Cremona loosing his match to Hanotoiux 0-2.

On Sunday’s individual event, not like the week before in Denmark, the results of our four Maltese players was far below level.

In the last 64 stage Mifsud was eliminated by French Gorgette 1-2 on golden goal, Mallia by Austrian Matzinger 0-1 and Gauci by Belgian Dejarden 0-2.

Only Cremona made it through the last 64 stage where he needed a golden goal winner to pass Spanish Gomes 2-1 but was eliminated in the last 32 stage by his team mate Lamberti 1-2.

Guimares of Portugal won the Individual event beating Flores of Spain 3-2.

Next weekend Massimo Cremona will travel to Bologna in Italy where he is going to make his debut in the Italian Serie A league reserved for Clubs.
