Malta Independent Friday, 10 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

A very keen and hard-fought game with both teams having their good moments. San Gwann have now qualified for the quarter finals.

Paola H created the first occasions. After a Gary Inguanez freekick a shot by Leighton Grech was cleared to a corner and San Gwann keeper Nicholas Vella saved a shot by Grech after being served by Bromwen Bugeja.

The Paolites forged ahead on five minutes when Sammy Piscopo put Grech through who scored on entering the area but San Gwann equalised three minutes later. Luke Sciberras served Dylan Mousu from a freekick, Hibs keeper Walter Farrugia saved the latter’s shot to a corner, and from Mousu’s flagkick Andrea Vella scored from inside the area.

Hibs kept pressing until the half-time whistle. From a Jonathan Xerri perfect cross Inguanez failed to apply the killer touch with only Vella to beat, from a through ball by Xerri, a cross-shot by Sammy Piscopo finished out, and in a San Gwann counter-attack Andre Vella put Luke Sciberras through but his shot missed the upright.

The Paolites had more of the exchanges after resumption. Grech put Piscopo through but he drove over the bar, from a Kenward Mifsud freekick Vella saved a header by Terrence Farrugia and from a Piscopo flagkick Xerri headed over the bar.

At the other end, from a Sciberras freekick Farrugia saved an overhead kick by Ryan Zammit.

Substitute Nathaniel Ebejer’s cross was cleared to a corner and from the flagkick by Inguanez, Julian Tonna’s header missed San Gwann's upright.

Luke Sciberras put Sergio Hili through but Farrugia foiled him with a timely sortie and later saved a header by Miguel Francica after a Sciberras freekick.

The final two actions were by Paola Hibs. Vella saved a header by Tonna after and Inguanez flagkick and Grech drove out when well placed after an Ebejer cross.

As the game ended in a draw penalty kicks had to be taken to decide the winner.

San Gwann scored four through Dylan Mousu, Luke Sciberras, Ryan Zammit and Eman O’Neil while Paola H scored two through Kenward Mifsud and Terrance Farrugia, Gary Inguanez hit the upright and San Gwann keeper Nicholas Vella saved the shot by Osbert Ellul.

Kirkop fielded only nine players and as expected Marsa had more occasions of scoring throughout the game and had they taken all the chances created the final score would have been much different.

Marsa dominated the first period. Kirkop keeper Tonio Gatt foiled Ian Pepe with a timely sortie after a Jonathan Martin through ball and saved a shot by Owen Micallef after a Brandon Spiteri pass. On seven minutes Marsa opened the score. Spiteri put Pepe through who scored on entering the area. The red/blues resumed their pressure. A shot by Micallef was cleared to a corner, a cross by Nigel McCarthy was neutralised by Gatt, from a Spiteri flagkick a shot by Pepe was cleared on the line and a lobbed ball by Martin missed the upright.

From a Joseph Rizzo through pass, Pepe skied the ball from two metres with only Gatt to beat who later saved a header by the same player after a Spiteri flagkick.

Soon after restart Kirkop equalised. Emmanuel Debattista put Omar Trabelisi through who scored with a rising shot from 30 metres past Marsa keeper Clint Mifsud.

On 47 minutes Marsa were awarded a penalty when Clyde Vella handled the ball in the area after a Spiteri flagkick, Vella was shown the red card and Spiteri drove over the bar from the penalty spot.

Owen Micallef put Spiteri through but his shot missed Kirkop's upright and a shot by Martin had the same fate minutes later after a pass by substitute Joshua Agius.

On 64 minutes Marsa regained their lead. From a Martin flagkick Christian Debono scored from inside the area, and five minutes from time they put the issue beyond doubt when Rizzo put Micallef through who scored a beauty with a rising shot from inside the area.

Three minutes before the end Marsa were reduced to 10 men as Neil McCarthy was shown the red card after a second bookable offence.
