Football – Bank Of Valletta Premier League: Nine-man Msida hold Hibernians to a draw

Malta Independent Monday, 20 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Nine-man Msida sprung a surprise result when they obtained a dramatic equaliser against Hibernians, to earn their first point of the Championship pool.

Even for Hibernians this was their first point after suffering two defeats in the second phase.

For Hibernians it was a dismal result obtained against a side that had to play the last 30 minutes with nine players. In fact Msida lost Mark Pulliciino and Josef Mifsud in the initial part of the second half, with Msida scoring their equaliser when playing with two players less.

The match only came to life in the dying minutes, especially after Msida obtained an incredible qualiser.

Goalkeeper Omar Borg was outstanding for Msida and kept his side in the game with some good saves. Nwoke and Babatunde had a rather quite afternoon, even though Nwoke has great merits in obtaining his side's goal.

For Hibernians this was yet another great disappointment, and they must surely improve to avoid further mishaps

The first shot at goal was effected by Cohen on three minutes and Mbong had a brilliant half volley missing the upright on eleven minutes.

Although the first minutes were very promising the rest of the first half was rather poor with Hibernians having territorial superiority but never really effective.

On the half hour Omar Borg effected a good save off a close range header by Cohen following a Failla cross.

On 35 minutes Borg was again instrumental saving a bombshell from Mbong.

Daniel Theuma blocked Doda in time denying the ex-Birkirkara player of a clear-cut chance. However Hibs were rewarded in stoppage time when Andrew Cohen beat Omar Borg with a well-executed free-kick.

Msida's first attempt came on 54 minutes when Babatunde headed slightly wide following a corner taken by Dino Cachia.

A minute later Msida were reduced to ten players when Mark Pullicino received the second yellow card for a handling infringement.

Six minutes later Msida lost another player when Josef Mifsud fouled Clayton Failla, with referee Caruana immediately brandishing the red card.

Oddly enough these two handicaps spurred Msida who fought for every ball.

However Hibernians had now ample spaces in the reds' rearguard, and Julian Vella missed a sitter in front of Borg after a good run by Cohen.

On 72 minutes David Camilleri shot slightly wide and minutes later Omar Borg was again called in action saving another Cohen freekick.

With eight minutes to go Msida obtained an incredible equaliser when Daniel Nwoke managed to squeeze the ball home.

Hibernians drove desperately forward with David Camilleri hitting over the bar
