The Malta Basketball Association yesterday presented a proposal for the staging of the Basketball Commonwealth Championship.

The MBA officials held the presentation in Melbourne, Australia. The Commonwealth Games Association organised a meeting in Melbourne yesterday as part of the games. The MBA is proposing that a Basketball Championship is to be organised every four years, as there is no guarantee that basketball is included in every Commonwealth Games. In fact this is the first time that basketball was included in the games.

The MBA is also putting forward its candidature to organise both male and female competitions in Malta in 2008.

FIBA representatives were also present during the meeting. FIBA is supporting this initiative and promised that they will get involved in the organisation of such tournaments.

The Commonwealth Basketball Commission will now study the proposal together with FIBA prior to a final decision.
