Malta Independent Saturday, 25 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

The Malta Team comprising Alex Borg, Guzi Grech and Simon Zammit reached the semi-finals at the European Championships in Carlow, Ireland, after defeating the Irish Republic’s No 1 team 10-7 in the quarter-finals yesterday.

They had to play the semi-final against Wales 1 late yesterday evening and until the time of going to press, the result was not yet in.

The Maltese had a good start winning five of the first six frames. By the end of the second session, the teams were 8-4 after a 3-3 share of the frames. In the third and final session, Ireland drew near as they won the opening two frames, but Grech and Borg won the next two frames to take an unassailable 10-6 lead before Simon Zammit lost the last frame.

It is well to note that Wales 1 include the IBSF 14-year-old world champion Michael White, the European Under 19 champion and Andrew Pagett, who is the Welsh champion.

In the other semi-final, Scotland were playing against Wales 2.

The final is to be played today at 3pm (Malta time).

In the seniors championship, the Maltese pair of Frans Mintoff and Tony Mifsud had to play against Finland in the semi-final.
