Malta Independent Monday, 27 March 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Marsa registered their second consecutive win beating lowly Lija who had to play for 65 minutes with a man less. This win keeps the Redblues on track for a Premiership berth.

Marsa were the better side, with Gilbert Martin once again showing all his potential, scoring a goal, and setting the third for Timmy Thomas.

Gilbert Martin could have scored another goal but he missed a penalty.

Another penalty was missed by Lija, who remain hovering dangerously in the lower part of the table. The sending off of their goalkeeper on 26 minutes was surely a severe blow in their quest to gain something from this match.

Marsa dominated the first part of the match with Gilbert Martin a real menace to the Lija defenders. On ten minutes Martin beat the offside trap dribbled past goalkeeper Mercieca but shot incredibly wide. Five minutes later Martin tested Mercieca from long range.

On 23 minutes Marsa took the lead when Steve Meilaq ran to a long ball by Scerri and anticipated Mercieca to score with a low shot. Three minutes later Marsa had a golden scoring opportunity when Martin was floored by goalkeeper Mercieca, with the referee Azzopardi awarding Marsa a penalty and sent off Mercieca. However from the penalty spot Gilbert Martin failed to beat reserve goalkeeper Luke Bonnici.

Four minutes later a good Martin first-timer slightly missed the base of the upright. In the final minutes Lija had two scoring opportunities. Marsa goalkeeper Casha brought the house down saving brilliantly a point blank header by Michael Gatt, and on 42 minutes a Brandon Lowell header slightly missed the upright.

Marsa doubled the score on 55 minutes when Gilbert Martin half-volleyed home a low freekick by Slavchev. On 64 minutes Lija had the chance to get back in the game when they were awarded a penalty for a Jean Paul Zammit foul on Michael Gatt, but Marsa goalkeeper Casha saved the resultant penalty taken by Anicic. On 78 minutes Marsa added another goal, when Gilbert Martin passed to substitute Timmy Thomas who scored after dribbled past goalkeeper Bonnici.
