Floriana forgot some of their championship worries beating last year's finalists Msida to move to the semi-finals of the U*Bet FA Trophy.
Floriana deserved the win in this low profile quarter-final, as they always showed the better ideas. Floriana had a good start taking an early lead through an Adrian Mifsud penalty, and they withstood the pressure, especially at the start of the second period, to score a second goal midway through the second half to put the issue beyond doubt.
Goalkeeper Agius was solid as usual between the posts, with Trevor Cilia and Christian Caruana displaying some good skills. Christian Cassar and Mano Micallef had a very good work rate, never giving away an inch in midfield. Adrian Mifsud proved to be deadly in front of goal obtaining the penalty, and scoring a breath taking second goal.
For Msida it was a very disappointing performance, as they only showed flashes of good aggressive football. The three foreign imports were in subdued form and that did not help Msida cause. Daniel Theuma played an offensive role but Msida's attack was never really menacing.
Floriana made their intentions clear from the opening minutes with Omar Borg diving in Christian Caruana's feet to block the danger. On six minutes Floriana took the lead when Mano Micallef started the move on the left and passed to Adrian Mifsud who was brought down inside the area by the onrushing Msida goalkeeper Borg. From the resultant penalty Adrian Mifsud made no mistake.
Msida had a very timid reaction, even though they went close with a Babatunde freekick going inches over the bar. On eleven minutes Floriana went close again with another good move on the left but Omar Borg denied Christian Caruana with a splendid save.
Slowly but surely Msida started to come to grips with their opponents with Babatunde the most menacing. Daniel Nwoke failed to head home an inviting Zongo cross, and Simon Agius saved a Paul Fenech freekick.
Near the end of the first half Gango-Rtsa almost committed an own goal in an attempt to clear, and a Josef Mifsud overhead kick went over the bar. Floriana broke the Msida supremacy with a long distance effort from Christian Caruana.
No changes were made at the interval and Msida had a couple of chances in the opening minutes with a Daniel Nwoke header and a Babatunde shot on the turn from close range going wide.
Tyrone Farrugia tested Agius from long range, but on 66 minutes the Greens sealed the issue with a well taken goal by Adrian Mifsud who shot beautifully in the top corner of the net after receiving from Christian Caruana.
Floriana custodian Agius kept his opponents at bay saving a good Daniel Theuma shot. Now Msida left ample spaces at the back and Floriana went close to scoring the third goal but Omar Borg denied Trevor Cilia with a daring save. Three minutes from time Omar Borg again came to Msida's rescue saving Adrian Mifsud's shot after a good move with Trevor Cilia.
