Restoration Works at Gudja chapel

Malta Independent Sunday, 16 April 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

Bank of Valletta has

supported the external restoration works at the Annunciation Chapel in Gudja.

This present day chapel, the third chapel to be built on the site, was commissioned in 1754 by Dun Gwann Barbara who financed the project himself with the support of the locals. The church was blessed on the 6 April 1755 by the then parish priest Fr John Paul Balzan. The chapel features Doric columns with a picturesque baroque window above the front door. A belfry was added in 1912. The main altar of the chapel, dedicated to the Annunciation is made entirely from marble and was funded by one of the benefactors of the chapel. The titular painting, representing Our Lady and Archangel Gabriel, is in a stone frame and is the work of Italian Artist Giovanni Gagliardi.

The stonework of this chapel had been exposed to the elements for over 250 years and was in dire need of restoration. The work was completed early in 2006 under the supervision of

the Restoration Division of the Ministry for Resources and Infrastructure with the support of Bank of Valletta.
