The Return of The Rifffs at Reflex ‘80s anniversary party

Malta Independent Saturday, 22 April 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

This year marks the 10th anniversary since DJ Alex Grech first presented his Reflex radio show. The three-hour show, which is broadcast on Saturday mornings at 10.30 on Capital Radio 88.7FM, specialises in music from the 80s. Over the years it has grown in popularity and become synonymous with the sounds of that decade.

In a statement, Alex said that “the show has become known for its originality, informative snippets and close rapport with its listeners. We try to offer the best tunes from the 80s, bringing an air of nostalgia to those who grew up with those songs. Despite the hard work involved, it is gratifying to know it is appreciated by those tuning in. The last ten years have been a dream!”

The programme’s strong following encouraged Alex Grech and his colleagues to start hosting Reflex 80s parties. Anyone who has ever attended can tell you that they are hugely popular and the crowds just keep growing. The next Reflex event will take place this coming weekend at Tattingers, and will be split over two nights, Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 April, which also happens to be Alex’s birthday!

The parties will also be particularly significant because they will feature the return of The Rifffs, one of Malta’s most prominent bands from the 80s. After moving to the UK, the band released a single, Dance Music For The 80s Depression, on Alternative Music Records, which was hugely popular back in 1981, and remains undisputedly one of the top tunes ever recorded by a local band. It will certainly go down a treat with all those who are planning to go the Reflex 80s Party Weekend! The Rifffs will also be performing some of their old songs as well as a number of new ones they are currently recording for their new album.

The Reflex 80’s Party Weekend is sponsored by Vodafone, Cisk Lager, Hopleaf Extra, Jim Beam, Red Bull, Securich, Cellefonic, SignDesign and Capital Radio 88.7. Tickets cost Lm2.50 per person. For more information, log on to www.reflexmalta.com.
