Athletics: Road Running League Comes to an end tomorrow at Marsascala

Malta Independent Saturday, 22 April 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The MAAA Road Running League returns this Sunday with the Marsascala 10k that will serve as the league’s final race of the season.

As always, in excess of 100 athletes are expected to take part with Charles Cilia (AS Libertas) being the favourite to win the event. If he manages to fulfil this expectation, Cilia will also land the overall title.

Gerald Grech, the pre-league favourite, lies in second at it will be difficult for him to try and overhaul his Libertas team-mate. Undoubtedly he will put in his maximum effort in order to close the gap as much as possible but if Cilia is in top form, there will be very little which Grech – or any other athlete for the matter – can do.

It is a similar story in the women’s category. Unless Carol Walsh also takes part, Lisa Marie Bezzina (Pembroke Athleta) will start as favourite to win both race and overall title. Her closest rival is Giselle Camilleri of St. Patrick’s AC but it would be a huge surprise if Camilleri were to come out on top.

Doreen Vella (Zurrieq Wolves), Carmen Hili (St. Patrick’s AC) and Cecilia Fenech (Zurrieq Wolves) also still harbour hopes of clinching the title.

As per tradition, the main focal point of the Marsascala 10k will be the race open exclusively for veteran athletes. These kind of races have proven to be terribly popular recently and with the MAAA working extremely hard to publicise this event as much as possible – with an attempt being made to attract foreign competitors – this year’s editions shouldn’t disappoint.

Although the two races have different starting times, ultimately the results achieved in both races will be amalgamated for the purposes of the Road Running League.
