Volleyball: Aloysians Grab Boys U-14 title

Malta Independent Thursday, 27 April 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

While Kerygma Blues, Paola Hibs Candy and San Anton all made a big step towards winning the titles in the three senior leagues, this weekend's top story comes from the Boys' U/14 league, with Aloysians regaining the title after a direct clash with Kerygma.

Tied up at the top of the standings, this match was a do-or-die clash for both teams. Aloysians played slightly better than their opponents, although Kerygma started on a very good note winning the first set 25-12. However, Alan Gauci's Aloysians turned the match in their favour by winning the next two, and the match 2-1, to win this league for the second year running.

In the Men's First Division, Kerygma Blues' 3-1 win against Fleur de Lys FEB has practically made sure of the title going Kerygma's way after a very long absence. The latter found the going tough throughout the match, however they were slightly better than their opponents in the first two sets which they won 26-24. With Kerygma fading away in the next one, FEB took a vital set, before succumbing again to Kerygma's better play in the fourth.

Paola's dominance in the Ladies' Senior League will be prolonged by another year, and only a slip in their last two matches will restrain them from doing this, with X-Sel closely behind to force a decider should this happen. However, seeing their form against CFK Fleur de Lys this weekend, when they won 3-0, conceding just 47 points to their opponents, it will be quite surprising should they lose any points against bottom team Kerygma in their next match.

San Anton are also closer to grabbing their second Second Division title in a row, but more than to their merits, it was Kerygma Yellows' defeat by Fleur de Lys B that opened the gap to four points with four more matches to go.

During this weekend, San Anton beat Aloysians Reds

3-0, while Kerygma Yellows lost 1-3 to CFK's B team. However, with two direct encounters between San Anton and Kerygma Yellows still to be played, the title is not sure which way it will eventually go.
