Malta Independent Friday, 28 April 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Malta ended their commitments on a successful note in the Slovakia Under-18 International Tournament which is being played in Piestany, Slovakia, ending up in third place in their Group A.

The Maltese youngsters managed to beat Hungary 1-0 in their last group match yesterday and thus obtain a prestigious result against a team who had earlier drawn their matches against USA, 2-2, and Slovakia, 1-1.

The only goal of the match was netted by the Hibernians forward Quilin Refalo in the opening half. Throughout the 90 minutes the Maltese, guided by coach Edwin Camilleri and assisted by Charles Scerri, were compact and unyielding, while at the same time they put up some good, positive fare.

It was a sound performance by our side, definitely the best they produced in their three-match stint in four days, after defeats against Slovakia and the United States. It was a landmark victory against an established footballing nation.

By virtue of this win over Hungary, Malta finished in third place behind the US, who lost to group winners Slovakia 2-1.

For Malta this tournament proved extremely useful and has vindicated the MFA's policy of giving our Youths the opportunity to face good calibre teams in overseas international competition.
