Malta Independent Sunday, 30 April 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The Malta Amateur Athletic Association, in collaboration with the Kunsill Malti Ghal L-Isport is organising yet another STAR TRACK (introducing athletics to young children) tomorrow 1 May at 9am at the Matthew Micallef Athletic Stadium.

This is simply a programme of basic sporting events which are meant for children, aged between 6 and 11 years, to enjoy themselves in games as they are introduced to the basic skills of athletics which, after all, has the basic elements required by all other sport disciplines.

This year’s event is being held under the guidance of the MAAA’s four event coaches, all of whom are IAAF Certified Level 2 Coaches, who will be assisted by some of the athletes who made Malta so proud in Andorra when they came away with no less then 17 medals.

During tomorrow’s two hour programme, which will include a break in which the children will be given drinks and some fruit, the children will be introduced to throwing the Javelin (actually a small Javelin made of ‘foam’), throwing the ball, jumps such as a standing long, a 40m sprint that includes hurdles and an obstacle race.

At the end of the programme all the children will be given a commemorative medal.

The parents who will be accompanying the children, will be invited to participate in a program of keep-fit exercises especially designed to help them control body weight and keep them healthy and smart.

Tomorrow registration starts at 8.30am, at the Matthew Micallef Athletic Stadium, Marsa.
