Malta Independent Saturday, 13 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Speaker of the House of Representatives Antone Tabone met the Speaker of the Balearic Parliament Pere Rotger i Llabres (photo), and his accompanying delegation yesterday. The Balearic parliamentary delegation included representatives from the Islands of Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza.

The two sides explored the possibility of future cooperation in various sectors, particularly inter-parliamentary cooperation. They mentioned similarities between Malta and the Balearic Islands, highlighting the issue of insularity.

Mr Tabone briefed the Balearic delegation on the House of Representatives’ commitments at the international level, underlining the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in international relations.

He stressed the fact that, although small in size and with rather limited resources, the Maltese Parliament has to function as a large parliament in order to meet its obligations, now that Malta is a member of the EU.

Mr Tabone also referred to Malta’s

initiative to set up a parliamentary assembly of the Mediterranean.
