Inspections carried out in recent days by the Animal Welfare Directorate and the Environmental Health Directorate have led to the discovery and rescue of many birds found in a condition of serious neglect.

These inspections were carried out at residences in Santa Venera and Qormi as part of ongoing efforts to investigate reports related to animal welfare.

During these inspections, officers found “a large number” of budgies and pigeons in poor conditions. The Animal Welfare Directorate stated on Wednesday that these birds were found in an environment that is unsuitable for their own welfare.

The Directorate also stated that “a significant number” of birds were found dead by officers upon arrival.

In the Qormi inspection, authorities discovered a pigeon loft containing more than 50 dead pigeons. Only four were found still alive. This pigeon loft was found to be used to keep racing pigeons. The Directorate said that these pigeons were being kept in “alarmingly neglected conditions.”

All live animals were taken for veterinary examination, assessed, and transferred to a safe environment where they can recover in appropriate conditions.

As a result of these findings, the animal owners will be subject to legal proceedings on grounds related to animal cruelty.

The Animal Welfare Directorate called upon people to submit any reports of suspected animal neglect/cruelty, without delay, through the freephone 153 (with extension 17) so that immediate action can be taken.
