Football – BOV First Division: St George’s Promoted in Premier League as Mqabba keep slim hopes alive

Mqabba 1

Tarxien R 0

Mqabba beat Tarxien thanks to an Anywanna strike fifteen minutes from time, to keep their slim promotion hopes alive.

They now hope that St Patrick will halt Marsa in the last match of the season this morning, as Mqabba have a one point lead over Marsa in second place.

League leaders St George’s were yesterday mathematically assured of a premiership berth after a ten-year waiting.

Yesterday’s match was rather disappointing, as much more was expected from Tarxien who offered a very opaque display.

Mqabba were surely the better team even though did not set any houses on fire.

Busuttil went close in the first half with a well taken freekick, and Anywanna missed a couple of easy chances especially just before half time with his shot just missing the crossbar.

On 75 minutes Mqabba scored the decisive goal when Anywanna pounced on a long ball by goalkeeper Calleja to beat Curmi with a perfect grounder.

Tarxien finished the match on a sad note when Alan Tabone was sent off after receiving his second yellow card.

Senglea A 1

San Gwann 0

Senglea beat San Gwann with a solitary goal in this typical end of season match.

This match had no importance as both teams lie safe in the middle of the table.

Senglea held the initiative for long stretches and their slender win was a well deserved one.

The winning goal was scored by Kenneth Abela two minutes before the break when he chiiped the ball over goalkeeper Spiteri.

Near the end Kenneth Abela went very close of adding another goal but his attempt hit the upright.
