The maxim in the service industry is the quality of service and if this is good, then people really don’t care about technology, Tecom’s chief marketing officer Michael Foley told The Malta Independent yesterday.

In exclusive comments to this paper right after Maltacom’s eighth annual general meeting, Mr Foley said that Malta is “an excellent” location for Tecom Investments to continue rolling out their SmartCity projects.

“The geographical location and the level of ICT infrastructure make Malta one of the best locations in the region for Tecom to expand its global services concept. Having said that, we intend to make huge investments in infrastructure to enable us to start providing those quadruple play services that are our eventual goal”.

Mr Foley added that Tecom was all out to improve the quality of life of Maltacom’s customers and would be listening to its employees and its customers to find out their specific needs.

“We have a combination of employees of over 45 different nationalities in our group so we are well placed to bring diversity and experience to the Maltacom operation. We are also really pleased with the high level of expertise of the local workforce and when we complement this with other human resources whom we will bring into the company then we will surely have a great opportunity to move forward.”

Mr Foley is also adamant that Maltacom will remain the country’s national telecommunications carrier and that there still is a future for fixed line business.

“Consumers don’t actually care about technology but they care about the quality of service they receive. It is an accepted fact that the fixed line business is still an essential part of Maltacom’s infrastructure and we envisage that will remain so.”

However, he believes that upgrading of mobile services is essential for participation in the local economy.

“In today’s age, a mobile phone is the passport to participate in the economy and we are eager to embark on our projects for eventual quadruple play services. I can’t really give you a specific timeframe but I can tell you that we are going to be faster than usual in implementing what we are talking about.”

Mr Foley also believes that the opportunities for Maltacom employees are huge and they will grow substantially with Tecom’s investment.

“We are now here in Malta and I can guarantee that the job prospects of all those employed at Maltacom together with other up-and-coming personnel are going to grow impressively as Tecom continues to grow”.
