The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Anglu Farrugia, today received a courtesy call by eight Ambassadors and High Commissioners based in London. The diplomatic delegation included the Ambassadors and High Commissioners of Malta, Luxembourg, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Honduras and Zambia, as well as the Head of the European Union Delegation.
During the cordial meeting, Dr Farrugia and the diplomatic representatives exchanged views on a number of issues of mutual interest, with particular emphasis on recent political and economic developments in Malta, European affairs, and regional challenges.
The Speaker briefed the Ambassadors and High Commissioners on the outcome of Malta's recent general election, highlighting the democratic process and the priorities of the newly elected administration. Discussions also focused on Malta's continued economic resilience and positive economic performance, which have contributed to the country's successful exit from the European Union's Excessive Deficit Procedure.
Dr Farrugia outlined Malta's strong economic fundamentals, including sustained growth, record employment levels, fiscal consolidation efforts, and the Government's commitment to maintaining sound public finances while continuing to invest in social and economic development. He also highlighted Malta's attractiveness as a destination for foreign direct investment, innovation, financial services, digital technologies, maritime services, and tourism.
The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on current European and regional issues, including developments affecting the European Union, security challenges in neighbouring regions, migration, energy security, and the importance of strengthening international cooperation in addressing common challenges.
The Speaker underscored Malta's longstanding commitment to multilateralism, dialogue, and parliamentary diplomacy as important tools for promoting peace, stability, and mutual understanding among nations. He noted that parliamentary engagement complements traditional diplomacy and contributes to the strengthening of bilateral and multilateral relations.
The Ambassadors and High Commissioners expressed their appreciation for Malta's active role within the international community and welcomed the country's positive economic trajectory. They also reaffirmed their commitment to further enhancing cooperation and strengthening relations between their respective countries and Malta.
