Football – U*Bet FA Trophy: Trevor Cilia Brace puts Floriana in final

Malta Independent Saturday, 20 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Trevor Cilia scored a brace in the second half to put Floriana through to the final of the U*Bet FA Trophy.

Floriana outclassed their more fancied opponents, especially in the second, where they took full command of the game thanks to a better midfield setup.

Goals apart Trevor Cilia was Floriana’s star yesterday. He was a constant menace whenever he got possession of the ball.

Both teams had significant absences in attack, with Sliema without Ivan Woods and the Greens without Adrian Mifsud.

Undoubtedly Woods was sorely felt in the Wanderer’s setup. In the opening stages Stefan Giglio had to partner Doncic in attack.

On the other part Danilo Doncic was in dismal form yesterday, as Sliema lacked the necessary punch up front.

Moreover, the Wanderers were inexistent on the flanks, and this made their game much difficult against faster opponents.

Joe Brincat and Rodrick Bajada tried their best in midfield, but were many a times outclassed by the speed and skills of Christian Caruana and Christian Cassar, with the former a delight to watch.

Oddly enough the Greens did not miss Adrian Mifsud’s killing instincts up front as Eviparker gave a five star performance, as he partnered beautifully with Oba, to give Darren Debono and Mauro Di lello a real hard time.

The match failed to live to its expectations in the first part with very few scoring chances.

Murphy Akanji was only tested once on seventeen minutes by Eviparker, with the Sliema custodian limping off nine minutes later.

Substitute Camilleri saved an Oba freekick with the same player missing from an ideal position.

Sliema’s best came near the end of the first half with Doncic’s flick hitting the upright following a Brincat freekick, and with the same Doncic missing a sitter just before half time.

In the second half the Greens were simply superior and Eviparker shot slightly wide following a good Oba run.

But on 71 minutes Floriana took a deserved lead when Eviparker passed to Trevor Clia who beat the offside trap and scored with a precise grounder.

Sliema desperately surged forward leaving gaping holes at the back.

Goalkeeper Matthew Camilleri effected his best save of the match denying Christian Caruana from the edge of the area.

Floriana almost paid the price for this miss as a Turner shot from the edge of the area slightly missed the upright, and six minutes from time a Doncici header slightly missed the crossbar following a Turner corner from the right.

On 87 minutes Manolito Micallef’s persistent run put him face to face with Camilleri, but his final shot was blocked by the Sliema custodian’s outstretched leg.

A minute from time Floriana doubled the score when Christian Caruana’s perfect pass found Trevor Cilia completely unmarked, and Cilia made no mistake beating Camilleri for the second time.

Now the Greens who avoided the drop in their last match, await anxiously today’s other semi final, where a win for the newly crowned champions will put them in the UEFA Cup.
