Malta Independent Saturday, 27 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

A Maltese language guidebook has been launched by Adrian Muscat and Charles Daniel Saliba, two teachers of Maltese. This follows the successful launch of Qawsallinu and Access.

The new book, MALTI ahjar bi sforzi zghar, (Better Maltese with a slight effort), is intended for those individuals who are interested in writing in the Maltese language and to appreciate the fact that Maltese is not as difficult as it is sometimes deemed.

This pocket size book, the first of its kind, is also an important tool for all those who want to get a good grasp of our language. The book includes:

• an overview of the main elements which make up our language

• suggestions on the writing of loan words

• a guide to address the most common grammatical errors

• different models which can be used to better the orthography

• a short explanation of some grammar terminology

• an up to date explanation of some important orthographic principles

Adrian Muscat studied at St Augustine’s College, G.F.Abela Upper Lyceum and at the Faculty of Education within the University of Malta where he graduated as a teacher of Maltese. He teaches at the Dun Guzepp Zammit Brighella Boys Junior Lyceum. Mr Muscat also taught at the Corradino Correctional Facility. Currently he is pursuing his studies at the University of Malta, reading for a certificate in proof-reading.

Charles Daniel Saliba studied at the Ninu Cremona Lyceum, Victoria Gozo. He furthered his studies at the M.A. Refalo Lyceum Complex, and then at the Faculty of Education within the University of Malta where he graduated as a teacher of Maltese. He teaches at the G.P.F. Agius de Soldanis Lyceum Complex in Victoria. To further enhance his sound knowledge of the Semitic elements in Maltese, he is reading for a diploma in Arabic at the University of Malta.
