Maltese Football rights 2006-2008: Mouths shut tight over mobile phone football rights

Malta Independent Sunday, 28 May 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Mobile phone operators have not divulged whether they have bid for the right to broadcast the goals of domestic matches for the next two seasons on mobile phones.

A spokesperson for Vodafone (Malta) Limited said: “The information required is commercially sensitive; we are unable to comment.”

The spokesperson for go mobile said the company did not wish to comment. “Since the tendering process is being conducted by the Malta Football Association (MFA), it is up to the MFA to reveal the name of the bidders”.

As expected, the MFA would not reveal anything either. Its media officer said: “I regret to inform you that I have no information regarding this matter.”

For the first time, the MFA is offering mobile phone operators the possibility of showing clips of goals of the Premier League, other competitions in which Premier League clubs are competing, and the National football teams.

Since the rights are non-exclusive, both go mobile and Vodafone might end up showing the goals on their respective mobile phone networks. At present, they only offer the results of domestic football matches.
