Malta Independent Friday, 2 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Alex Borg of Melita Band Club, Imsida retained the title of Malta Champion yesterday evening when he beat Simon Zammit of Jesmonds Sports Club, Hamrun 7-2 in the final.

It is the sixth time – and the fourth consecutive – that Borg has won the title.

Played in front of a good number of spectators at the Peace Band Club of Naxxar, the final was controlled by international referee Paul Galea.

Borg started well potting a 48 break to take the first frame and quickly added the second 91-19. Zammit looked like he was going to pull one back when Borg needed a snooker on the brown. But when Zammit failed to hit an easy snooker, Borg cleared the last four colours to win the frame 67-65 and extend his lead to 3-0. He also won the next three frames helped by breaks of 48 and 69 – the highest of the match – to go six up with seven to play. Though Zammit won the seventh and eight frames, Borg built a good lead in the ninth to win it 78-1 and win the title.

After the match MBSA President Dr. David Farrugia Sacco presented the Championship Cup to Alex Borg.

Next week, the two players will be representing Malta in the European Snooker Championships in Constanta, Romania where Borg will be defending the title he won last year in Poland.
