Assistance Needed for the conservation of historical heritage – Labour MPs

Malta Independent Saturday, 3 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Commenting on the recent launch of MEPA’s scheme worth Lm40,000 for the conservation of wooden balconies, Labour spokespersons Karl Chircop and Stefan Buontempo said that while this was a good initiative, it was also replicating other schemes offered by the Housing Authority.

They said the authority already has three schemes, which are related to the one being offered by MEPA, and these schemes have several pre-requisites including household income.

Additionally those people who have their properties situated outside the three localities cited by MEPA are unable to apply for funds to restore their balconies, they added.

The Labour spokesmen said that it did not make sense for MEPA to reduce this scheme to just three localities apart from the fact that there were significant expenses involved such as taxes, VAT and architect’s fees. They said that because of these costs only around 60 balconies will benefit from the scheme.

Dr Chircop and Mr Buontempo called for MEPA to team up with the Housing Authority to provide assistance for those who wish to restore their balconies but do not have the financial means to do so. They also suggested a one-stop shop between both authorities so that the historical heritage of the country could really be protected for all.
