The eighth and final Masters football tournament will be held at the new Luxol St Andrew’s football stadium on Sunday 11 June.
Usual participating teams were those of Sliema, Valletta, Hibernians, Floriana, Hamrun and Zurrieq. Sliema won the first edition; Valletta the second and third and ended on equal points with Hibernians in the fourth tournament.
Hibs lifted the cups of the 5th and 6th and 7th tournaments. It will therefore be a great challenge for Hibernians to win this final tournament again and for Valletta or Zurrieq to try to take this last Challenge Cup home.
The first edition of these games started at the then Luxol hard surface ground to which all the participants, having played at the Gzira Stadium were used to. It is therefore fitting that these tournaments comes to end at their place of origin.
Unfortunately, this edition will not see the veterans of Sliema, Floriana and Hamrun taking part. The three teams participating will be Zurrieq, Hibernians and Valletta.
These are the fixtures: 9am, Zurrieq-Hibernians; 9.45am, Valletta-Hibs/Zurrieq; 10.30am, Valletta-Hibs/Zurrieq.
These 11 a-side football tournaments, organised single handedly by former Valletta and Malta midfielder Eddie Vella, have over the past years, achieved their set goals.
The players had spent most of their carriers at the Gzira Stadium and had represented Malta in international games. Besides reviving their competitive spirit, they also rekindle their friendship and exchange memories of the distant past during a small reception after the final game.
The games will be controlled by retired MFA officials. Directors of Sedqa and Lowenbrau are assisting with sponsorships
