Hockey: Sliema Hs Dominate local junior scene

Malta Independent Saturday, 3 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Rabat Depiro may be the top team in the Hockey Association of Malta’s senior competitions but no one can deny that at junior level, Sliema Hs have one of the best, if not the best, nurseries on the island.

At the moment the nursery is made up of 70 boys and, significantly, girls under the guidance of ten coaches led by head coach Manuel Imbroll. These include a coach responsible for girls’ development (Sandro Lanfranco).

This year the junior teams participated in all leagues organised by the Hockey Association: U-16 (one team), U-14 (two teams) and the new U-12 (two teams), winning the U-12 and U-14 and finishing runners up in the U-16.

These two victories have now pushed Sliema Hs victories at junior level up to 20. The nursery also includes an U-12 girls section as well as an upcoming U-14 squad from the Hamrun Junior Lyceum that has participated in one-day tournaments.
