A new traffic management plan is currently being implemented at the Cruise Passenger Terminal by the Malta Cruise Network (MCN).
The new system, which is being put in place in collaboration with the terminal operators VISET, the ADT, and the Valletta Police, will reduce congestion and improve the experience of visiting the Valletta Waterfront for both cruise passengers and other visitors.
Explaining the need for the new management system, MCN coordinator Ben Stuart said: “The fact that the Valletta Waterfront is a long and narrow site makes traffic management quite a complicated task. When the area is busy, either with visiting ships or because of special events at the Valletta Waterfront, there have been particular problems. This, coupled with irresponsible behaviour by a few individuals operating in the area, has prompted us to review the situation and devise this new system which we are confident will go a long way to solving the problems that have arisen.”
As part of the new traffic management system, specific areas have been designated for taxis, karozzini, public buses and other vehicles. A pick and drop off zone for coaches has also been set up. Personnel working at the Terminal or at the Valletta Waterfront have now been assigned a specific parking area at the Deep Water Quay car park.
To further ease congestion a tunnel has been opened leading from the MCP car park to the Valletta Waterfront. This means that members of the public who park at the MCP can now reach the Valletta Waterfront on foot in approximately five minutes.
In order to ensure that the new system is adhered to, CCTV cameras have been installed and personnel from both the ADT and the police will be on hand to ensure enforcement.
New signage and road markings are also currently being installed in order to help the public and service providers adapt to the new system.
