Rumours are rife that Sliema’s Serbian striker Danilo Doncic, now 37 years old, is eyeing a return to his former club Valletta.

The Wanderers are set to part company with the striker who has had a wonderful spell at Sliema whom he helped to three Championships in a row and one Trophy win among other honours.

Doncic (photo), established himself as one of the best strikers in the Premier League since he started his Malta spell with Valletta in the mid-1990s.

Doncic, however, will have to wait for some good news from the citizens’ camp or search for a new club.

Valletta, in fact, are passing through a turbulent moment at present, and today’s annual general meeting will not feature the usual election for the committee, as only two persons have been nominated to contest the election.

As The Malta Independent said last week, some persons, still unknown so far, had been issuing leaflets in which they urged club members not to vote for three persons of the outgoing committee, that is executive vice-president Paul Spiteri, general secretary Anton Abela and treasurer Mario Muscat.

None of the former members of the committee accepted to be nominated for the election.

What happens now is that today’s meeting will have to be adjourned, possibly to next Sunday, if there are enough nominations from persons to sit on the committee.

Such nominations could even be accepted today during the meeting, from among those present.
