Sting: A cool seven star rock icon

Malta Independent Tuesday, 13 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

You may ask why did I classify Sting as a seven star rock icon? Well they tell me that in Dubai, super de luxe hotels are classified beyond the customary five star properties as seven star hotels. Under these circumstances I feel that in the light of his recent highly successful Malta gig he deserves the seven star classification.

His set provided the right balance between his rock-based items and more melodic pieces which were all strung together by a deep sense of sophistication. Desert Rose, Englishman in New York and Roxanne were the highlights of the night.

The backing band could not have been tighter while his son provided more than the customary warm-up band.

If you thought sitting in the Golden Circle meant literally sitting down throughout the concert, you were mistaken. We spent most of our time standing and applauding the artist right through.

It brought back memories of the occasion when I first saw The Police on Halloween Night in 1980 – just before the US Presidentials – after having travelled by train from San Francisco to Oakland, California.

The man might have aged in the process – as we have all done – but he has mellowed with the passage of time and developed into a fully-fledged icon that fully deserves his seven star status, without having lost any of his potent fire and sense of creativity.

Finally, a word of thanks and praise for the organisers, particularly for the professionalism they showed and the good choice they made. This leaves us looking forward to the Roger Waters gig which can only help us reach new musical heights.
