Current European Snooker champion Alex Borg remained on course to retain the title after winning his quarter final clash against Yannick Poulain of France 5-1. The championships are being held in Constanta, Romania.

Borg took the first frame 72-35 with a break of 56. He added the second 73-5 helped by a break of 47. It became 4-0 before the mid-session interval when he won the next two including a break of 55 in the fourth. Frenchman Poulain avoided the whitewash by winning a scrappy fifth frame 50-22 but it was the Maltese who booked a place in tomorrow's semi-final when he clinched a close sixth frame which Borg won on the pink.

Borg will meet Norway's Kurt Maflin in tomorrow's semi-final scheduled to start at 1900hrs local time. The semi-final will be the best of 11 frames.

Maflin has eliminated the other Maltese player Simon Zammit in the last 16 stage and beat John Torpey of the Republic of Ireland 5-0 in the quarter finals.

In the other quarter final matches, Lasse Munstermann of Germany is leading Jamie Jones of Wales 4-3 and Gerrit bij de Lejl of the Netherlands is level at 2-2 against Jeff Cundy of England.
