Alex Borg successfully defended the European title he won last year in Poland when in yesterday's final, he beat Jeff Cundy of England 7-5. The championships were held in Constanta, Romania. Borg won all his 12 matches played in this year's championships and yesterday’s was the 24th win in a row after he was unbeaten last year.

Borg took a 3-0 lead including a break of 62 in the third but Cundy hit back winning the next three frames for 3-3.

After the interval Borg once again won three frames in a row including a 107 break in the ninth. Cundy won a tense 10th on a respotted black and added the 11th for 6-5 in favour of the Maltese. In the 12th frame Cundy needed a snooker on the last red when Borg led by 36 points. However when Borg failed to hit a difficult snooker, Cundy was clearing up until he missed an easy brown in the middle pocket. Borg potted the brown, blue and pink to win the match 7-5, thus claiming the European title for the second consecutive time.

Alex Borg and Simon Zammit, the other Maltese player in these championships will be arriving in Malta this afternoon at 12.45pm, from Frankfurt.
