Malta Independent Friday, 16 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The Paolites registered a double having won Section A honours a fortnight ago. They were the better outfit throughout the whole game. San Gwann deserve to be praised for being the first Section B side to reach the final stage of this competition and next season will compete in Section A as they were promoted after winning Section B.

Hibs started straight on the offensive. San Gwann keeper Jean M. Vella had to neutralise a well-taken flagkick by Matthew Gauci, Bertrand Duncan put Tristan Caruana through in the area, the latter’s shot was cleared to a corner and from Gauci’s flagkick the ball was cleared to another corner. Randall Refalo then square-passed to Andre Farrugia and from his shot from outside the area he brought the best out of Jean M. Vella who tipped the ball over the bar with a spectacular save, who later also saved a header by Elkien Cauchi after a Caruana flagkick. In a rare San Gwann attack, Peter Xuereb square-passed to Jamin Farrugia but he drove well over the bar from outside the area..

On 17 minutes Hibs forged ahead through James Coates who headed in after a Caruana flagkick. Hibs resumed their pressing and Yan Cauchi, twin brother of Elkien, just failed to get his head for the killer touch after a Randall Refalo perfect through ball. Vella saved on Yan Cauchi after a Caruana freekick. Two minutes before the break Hibs doubled when from a Caruana cross Yan Cauchi netted from inside the area after beating a defender,

Few were the actions worthy of note during the second period. The first action came from San Gwann, a cross by Steve Pisani was partially cleared hit the rebound shot by Quincy Bregnam missed the upright. Hibs reacted soon, Yan Cauchi served Refalo with a through ball and Vella had to come out of his charge to neutralise the latter’s cross, Andre Farrugia served Caruana with a cross-pass but his shot missed the upright.

In a San Gwann rare attack, Farrugia served Neil Goodlip with a through ball in the area but he miscued his shot with the ball finishing well out of target. The last couple of actions came from Hibs. Bertrand Duncan served Matthew Gauci with a perfect through ball but his shot from outside the area missed the upright and Yan Cauchi put Caruana through whose shot also missed the upright. After the game Ludovico Bartolo MFA vice-president presented the cup to Hibs captain Yan Cauchi.
