Puerto Flamenco Is back!

Malta Independent Saturday, 17 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Following on last year’s outstanding success of the Puerto Flamenco spectacle at the Grand Harbour, as well as successful touring around Europe and Spain, this summer brings us the premiere of the new and enhanced version of the acclaimed spectacle. This will take place on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 July at an attractive location on the quay of Customs House, Lascaris Wharf, Valletta.

Francesca Grima and Andrej Vujicic dare to raise the bar higher in a heartfelt attempt at bringing only the premier quality authentic flamenco from the heart of Seville. This year’s spectacle features the addition of the legendary gypsy dancer Carmelilla Montoya, one of flamenco’s most celebrated artists, winner of the Premio Nacional de Baile Flamenco (national award for flamenco dance) and world famous for her appearances with Camaron, Paco De Lucia, Familia Montoya, Lole y Manuel, Los Tarantos, and this year’s Gitanas with the Farruco family. She will be joining the unique talents of gypsy dancer Amador Rojas, and Malta’s own Francesca Grima, as well as an enhanced musical line-up.

The over 1,000-strong crowd of mesmerised spectators at last year’s Grand Harbour production can vouch for the excellence of this show which has been praised wherever it has been seen.

It was described as “A gooseflesh effect of the tidal waves of emotional energy...”, by Spancirfest, Croatia, September 2005.

Puerto Flamenco productions are renowned for their jaw-dropping technique, dazzling choreography, spontaneous improvisation, and electrifying music, and have been met with international critical acclaim as “an event which one does not often witness and which leaves its audience absolutely exhilarated.” (Politika, Belgrade October 2005) and “an unforgettable flamenco experience...” (Khamoro Festival Prague 2006). The production has been gaining international prominence with absolute sell-out performances at the Spancir Fest in Croatia, Belgrade’s Festival of Dom Omladine, Khamoro Festival in Prague, Sziget Festival in Budapest, and Miercoles a Compas at Endanza in Seville.

The open-air event is supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, The Spanish Embassy, Torres Wines and the Valletta Local Council. Tickets at Lm7 are available from St James Cavalier or at the door.
