The Malta Union of Teachers yesterday said it agreed with the Labour Party on the need to restructure the education system from its roots, however it disagreed on a number of points in the party’s draft plan.
A delegation from the MUT yesterday met officials from the Malta Labour Party in Hamrun.
Labour Leader Dr Alfred Sant told the MUT that investment in education would remain a priority for the party and it wanted to see substantial improvements in the shortest timeframe possible.
MUT president John Bencini told Dr Sant that the Party’s plan did not include anything on the setting up of a teachers’ council. He said the MUT had certain reservations on the clause that proposes setting up a “reception” class, thereby increasing the mandatory schooling age to 17.
The MUT told the Labour Party that further studies and discussions were required before any decision was taken.
