Malta Independent Monday, 26 June 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

One of the greatest Queen tribute bands from the UK, Killer Queen, will playing at Bob Geldof’s concert at Manoel Island on Wednesday.

The concert, which will raise funds for the YMCA Valletta, is being presented by Vodafone Malta Limited and HSBC Cares For Children Fund and will also feature performances by Maltese artists Ira Losco, Carrie & Band, and Winter Moods. Supporting Bob Geldof on the night will also be tribute bands from the UK for Coldplay and U2.

Killer Queen offers an authentic Queen stage set. Patrick Myers presents the real live Queen Tribute – the sound and the look, combined with the showmanship, pomp, style and incredible musicianship that was the hallmark of Queen in concert. This tribute to Queen features Patrick backed by his superb four-piece band handpicked to emulate Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor, along with the most spectacular stage set-up and stunning costumes.

Killer Queen formed in 1993 and quickly became a hit on the UK College and club circuit.

They played the London’s West End Strand Theatre to excellent reviews and national TV coverage. They have performed in Moscow, Dubai, Cannes, The Azores, Bangkok and Estonia.

They also scored an international number one dance hit with Raven Maize and Fat Boy Slim when The Real Life used lead singer Patrick Myers’ voice to recreate the classic Bohemian Rhapsody harmony. Killer Queen celebrated 10 years with a show at Thunder Park before a 25,000 strong Brands Hatch crowd.

Time Out described their lead singer’s resemblance to Freddie Mercury as “spooky” which, combined with a powerful 3 1/2 octave tenor range and dynamic stage presence, has impressed audiences the world over. Their outrageous set spans Queen’s entire recording career from the Seven Seas of Rye through to their 90s classics.

Their world-class status as an outstanding tribute to Queen was recognised by the music industry when Madness presented them the title of 1999 Worldwide Tribute Band Of The Year.

Tickets for the Bob Geldof concert, at Lm10, are available from Vodafone’s Retail Outlets across Malta and Gozo, while very limited tickets including open bar for the Camilleri Wines VIP area are also available at Lm50 each. More information may be obtained from www.ymcahomeless. org.

XFM Malta is the official radio station for the concert and Air Malta is the official carrier.
