Ten-man Marsaxlokk bowed out of the UEFA Intertoto Cup yesterday as they could only draw 1-1 against NK Zrinjski of Bosnia-Herzegovina in the second leg at the Hibs Ground.

Andre Schembri scored for Marsaxlokk on 34 minutes, but the visitors equalised on 82 minutes through Smijic, after the southern seasiders had Cleaven Frendo expelled on 78 minutes.

Marsaxlokk, with Reuben Gauci back in goal and with David Camilleri back in the side after his loan term with Hibernians, were the better team in the first half but missed a good chance to open the scoring on 26 minutes when Bogdanovic was floored in the area by Dzidic. The Moldovan official Sidenko pointed to the dreaded spot, but Cleaven Frendo hit wide.

After Zizovic missed a good opportunity for the visitors, Marsaxlokk finally took the lead on 34 minutes. Andre Schembri met Frendo’s cross to beat the Bosnian goalie with a low shot.

Close to the interval, Marsaxlokk should have scored again but Frendo concluded weakly after rounding the goalie and a defender blocked the ball.

On the changeover, Bogdanovic and Pace went close for the locals before Frendo was shown the red card on the 78th minute for hitting an opponent.

Four minutes later, Zrinjski equalised through Suleman Smijic and almost won the contest on the stroke of time had it not been for a fine save by Gauci off Zizovic.

The Bosnians, who had won the first leg at home 3-0 last week, qualified on a 4-1 aggregate.

Marsaxlokk: R. Gauci, C. Magro (S. Tellus), C. Mamo, S. Wellman, K. Sammut, D. Camilleri, G. Sciberras (K. Mamo), S. Bajada (J. Pace), C. Frendo, A. Schembri, D. Bogdanovic.
