A Trip Down Memory Lane , an article about people suffering from dementia by Stanley Borg, was named best national article in the EU Journalist Award 2005.
It was selected national winner for Malta in the EU’s “For Diversity, Against Discrimination Journalist” Award 2005.
The annual competition recognises work that contributes to a better understanding of the benefits of diversity and the fight against discrimination in employment. Stanley Borg’s article also went through to the European Final where an independent EU jury will decide the European winners from 25 national finalists.
Stanley Borg is a freelance contributor to the Times of Malta, the Sunday Times of Malta, Grip, M, Modern Elegance and Sunday Circle. He is also the author of Waiting for Green and wrote the text of Norbert Francis Attard’s Four Olympics.
The Maltese jurors were Laura Mifsud Bonnici, Noel Grima, Janet Mifsud, Godwin Scerri and Pippa Zammit Cutajar. The jury selected the winner from nine entries. On an international level, a total of 380 valid entries were considered for the award. Over 500 entries were in fact received for this competition from all 25 EU member countries.
The first prize of the “For Diversity. Against Discrimination” journalist award has been won by two Dutch journalists who work for the magazine Vrij Nederland. The winning article deals with ethnic and racial discrimination in the jobs market in The Netherlands. The second and the third prize were won by articles from Poland and Ireland respectively. The award for the photo category also goes to a Dutch journalist of Vrij Nederland.
Following the success of previous years, the Journalist Award will continue in 2006. This year’s award will accept articles published in print and on-line media. For the first time, it will be open to articles about discrimination and diversity published in internal newsletters and company magazines. In addition, 2006 will see the introduction of a special award for young journalists.
