Valletta won the eighth Masters football tournament, organised once again by former Valletta and Malta player Eddie Vella.

This year’s event was held at the recently opened Luxol Stadium. Valletta, Hibernians and Zurrieq took the part.

The first game between Hibs and Zurrieq ended in a goalless draw. After the penalties Hibs won and thereby obtained two points and Zurrieq one.

Valletta then played against losers Zurrieq and again, after a goalless 30 minutes, Zurrieq lost to Valletta on penalties. Zurrieq thereby obtained another point and Valletta, after winning this game, received two points.

Hibs and Valletta faced each other in the final game and both had two points. The game was very well contested with both teams trying to score early in the match. However, it was Valletta who drew first blood with a beautiful hard shot from 20 yards by Dennis Fenech. Hibernians tried hard to level the score, but Valletta scored another two goals in counter-attacks, one from a penalty scored by Nardu Farrugia and the final goal coming from Iro Curmi.

Dr John Debattista of Lowenbraw who, together with Sedqa, had partly sponsored this tournament, presented the cup to Dennis Fenech.
