Court: Judge Orders man’s re-arrest after mother withdraws personal guarantee

Malta Independent Tuesday, 4 July 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

A judge yesterday ordered that a man charged with murdering the mother of his child be arrested after his mother’s application to withdraw the Lm10,000 personal guarantee she placed on her son was upheld.

David Norbert Schembri, from Sliema, is facing criminal proceedings in connection with the murder of Josette Scicluna on 3 May 2004 who was stabbed to death in the presence of their daughter in a flat in San Gwann. He is awaiting trial.

Mr Justice Joseph Galea Debono upheld Evangelista Schembri’s request to withdraw the personal guarantee she had submitted on 15 November 2005 for her son to be granted bail.

Mrs Schembri’s request was filed on 23 June, just three days before Mr Schembri was arrested and charged in court with trying to escape from Malta.

Mr Justice Galea Debono ordered his re-arrest until Mr Schembri provides another Lm10,000 as a personal guarantee for him to be released on bail again.
