Last Saturday at about 5.30pm unknown persons forced their way into an Enemalta substation situated at the Rinella Film Studios and vandalised the high-tension switchgear located inside the substation, the corporation said in a statement yesterday.

The switchgear that was damaged in this incident caused the high-tension parts to short-circuit and as a result, supply was interrupted to parts of Tarxien, Zabbar, Kalkara, Ricasoli and Rinella.

Enemalta engineers and technical officers immediately took action to determine the cause of the fault and to restore supply to the affected localities. Since the cause of this failure was not immediately known, Enemalta engineers tested all high-tension components before the supply could be restored.

Restoration of supply started at 7pm and was completed by 11.30pm, except for the Ricasoli Industrial Estate where temporary arrangements were taken to replace the damaged switchgear. The police were informed about this incident and are carrying out the necessary investigations, the corporation said.
