Two Years’ waiting to meet PM

Malta Independent Sunday, 9 July 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

After waiting two full years for an appointment, Italian lawyer Michele Martone, accompanied by Italian Ambassador Paolo Trabalza, finally got to meet the Prime Minister last week.

Dr Martone handed Dr Gonzi a three-page memorandum in which he claimed “monstrous legal mistakes and corruption” by some Maltese government representatives in their responsibilities over the past 34 years following the bankruptcy of Bical.

He reminded Dr Gonzi of an agreement between Italy and Malta which became Italian law last January, and which aims at the protection of Italian investors in Malta.

He also reminded Dr Gonzi of no less than three agreements signed over the past years, including one signed by then finance minister George Bonello Du Puis, which remained unimplemented.

Dr Gonzi promised to investigate and to reply.
