During the month of June, the Nature Protection Unit (NPU) Inspectorate processed 95 applications to import or export flora and fauna specimens or parts and derivatives. In addition, the NPU Inspectorate issued a total of 12 CITES permits, certificates or EC Trade permits.

During the same month, the NPU Inspectorate received 17 reports and requests for assistance from the public or other law enforcement agencies. A total of 15 inspections were carried out in response to these reports to ensure compliance with wildlife protection regulations. During these inspections several fauna specimens were examined and identified.

In June, members of the NPU Inspectorate were also summoned to Court to give witness during hearings involving contraventions against nature protection regulations. 12 cases were heard in Court during five court sittings. Half of these cases ended in a conviction whilst the remaining were deferred. Five of these convictions were cases of possession and importation of protected fauna and possession of prohibited means of capture for which the Courts meted out fines amounting to Lm 370 and ordered the confiscation of a total of 35 protected birds, one hedgehog and five traps. Another case pertained to hunting within a bird sanctuary for which the court meted out a fine of Lm 225.
