Girl Guides Build bridge with the elderly

Malta Independent Saturday, 15 July 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

Nibnu Pont, a girl guides’ campaign, will reach its climax in the coming days, when San Vincenz De Paule residence’s grounds will be turned into a camping site for 300 girl guides.

The campaign, which was launched last February, is aimed at ‘bridging’ the younger to the older generation through weekly visits by girl guides to various residences for the elderly.

Health Minister Louis Deguara, parliamentary secretary Helen D’Amato and commissioner for children Sonia Camilleri were present for the opening ceremony of the camp. Residents who are former girl guides were also present.

While reiterating the aim of the programme, Ms D’Amato said that there was lack of communication between the two generations. She said that “children do not sufficiently understand the needs and abilities of the elderly while the elderly most of the time forget the benefits they can get from children’s energy.”

Minister Deguara, who is also responsible for elderly care, said that the children’s presence can fill the lives of the elderly who might not have young nephews and nieces while increasing children’s respect towards the older generation.

He said that such activities should be encouraged because of their great social value.
