Champions League: Birkirkara Travel to Faroe Islands for second leg match

Malta Independent Tuesday, 18 July 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

Birkirkara FC players and staff yesterday left Malta to the Faroe Islands to play the second leg of the first qualifying round of the Champions League.

After an embarrassing 3-0 home defeat by B36 Torshavn, the Maltese champions face a very difficult task, trying to surmount the deficit. Although qualification looks already a forlorn conclusion, especially if coach Stephen Azzopardi fails to recover some of the injured key players who missed the first game, Birkirkara may still regain some lost pride by obtaining a better result than the one at Ta' Qali last Tuesday if the players gel together.

Nedless to say, the local champions must show a great improvement in their performance as well as more commitment against the athletically superior side from the Faroe Islands to stand any chance of avoiding another humiliation which Maltese football cannot afford.

The game will be played in Torsvollur Stadium tomorrow at 8pm.
