The government has no vision and has led Malta into a situation that only a new Labour government can solve, with its comprehensive plans to give the country a breath of fresh air and a fresh start, Labour deputy leader Michael Falzon said yesterday.
Dr Falzon said that unlike the present government, a new Labour leadership will not be a “pass the buck” government, but will give the country a new beginning.
Addressing the party’s extraordinary general conference which comes to an end tomorrow, Dr Falzon said the Malta Labour Party was offering concrete proposals to solve the problems Malta is facing. He added that it was evident that people wanted a change in leadership and in the way the country was being run. The MLP was working to bring about this change and to bring about a new start for the country, he stated.
He said that after it drew up the document with a plan for Malta’s social and economic regeneration, the party has drawn up another four documents on the health sector, education, industry and finally one on Gozo.
Dr Falzon touched upon each of the four documents seeking approval at the conference.
He said the MLP’s plan in the health sector was “essential” for Malta. With this plan, the party will be giving Maltese citizens a better, healthier future. He said the party’s plan was a positive and forward-looking one. On the education document, Dr Falzon said this focuses on the problems facing the education sector in Malta. One in every six students leaves school with barely a basic knowledge of reading and writing. This situation is very worrying and the MLP is preparing to address this problem seriously.
He said the industry sector in Malta needs to be given all the support it needs. Unlike other people, we are not prepared to bet on which sector of industry in Malta will be the first to close its doors and make its workers redundant, he said, with a clear reference to Investment Minister Austin Gatt.
Dr Falzon also drew comparisons between the present government and previous Labour governments. He said that whereas Labour governments always created companies and structures in the country’s best interest, the present government was selling these to third parties.
He said the party was aware that these plans were not enough but added that the party has the determination to implement the right measures following a victory in the next general election.
