“Yes. I do”. With these words the 20-minute film Katrina by Eleonora Rose Abela came to end. The film was screened on Friday at Ir-Razzett l-Antik in Qormi.
Eleonora is in her final year of Communications at the University of Malta, and in order to fulfil her requirements for her degree she produced a short film with the main theme being “self-confrontation”. The story takes place in Malta in the mid 1950s. The film was shot in Gudja, Tal-Hlas Chapel in Hal Qormi and Ghammar in Gozo, to emphasise the message and the characters of the film. The protagonist Katrina, played by 15-year-old Katrin Mari’ Pavia, “is a person who confronts adversity in order to try to gain attention from the other person,” explains Eleonora. All the actors are amateurs acting for the first time in front of a camera, and the result is remarkable.
The film does not have much dialogue, but the body language and music help tell the story .
Eighty-five people attended the premiere of the movie, which was produced in six months. Eleonora not only directed the film, but was also the editor and the camerawoman. Since her father runs his own business, dealing among other things with photographing and TV productions, she decided to “continue in his artistic footsteps,” she said. Today, she is not only the chief editor, but also the production manager of audiovisual productions.
When she finishes her course in September, she wants to continue her studies abroad, in America or Great Britain.
But before that, her latest production will be broadcast on Net Television next Wednesday.
