Three Maltese Youths for Udinese training camp

Malta Independent Sunday, 23 July 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

Three Maltese youths, Jean Mathias Vella and Rhys Sullivan from San Gwann, together with Lydon Lee Micallef from the Mosta Youth Football Nurseries, will be attending an intensive pre-season training camp in Asiago Italy from the 21 to 30 July. This course is being organised by Udinese Calcio, the youth Development arm of the Serie A club that bears the same name.

The training camp is being organised for a selected hundred youths from the club development programme, and the participation of the Maltese youngsters was made available thanks to the good contacts that some officials from the San Gwann Nursery have with Signor Luigi Infurna from the Udine Club.

Both San Gwann boys are goalkeepers, with Jean forming part of the Under 14 Section B Championship winning team and Knock-out finalists, and Rhys looking out to be equally promising albeit his young age. Lydon plays his trade solidly in a midfield position with one of the strong Mosta FC youth teams.

The boys will be monitored closely by Udinese Primavera Coach Signor Zavattieri as well as head coach Signor Galeone, who will also be with the Senior Squad in Asiago where Udinese are to commence their pre-season friendlies with a game against the local team.

Christopher Sant, Secretary of the San Gwann Nursery commented that the new administrative set-up at his club is enabling the realisation of a number of plans that would ultimately benefit youth football in the local football community.
