The Xuereb sisters, Martina and Francesca, became the darlings of the Maltese contingent in Hungary yesterday as they obtained a gold medal each.
After winning the 300m event on Sunday, Martina finished first in the 200m yesterday in a time of 25.68 seconds to claim her second gold at these Games.
Later yesterday Martina won another medal when she clinched the silver after finishing second in the 800m in a time of 2 mins. 18 seconds.
The gold medal in this event was won by Francesca in a time of 2 minutes 16 seconds, just ahead of her sister.
These two athletes are coached by Mark Farrugia.
In basketball, Malta's girls obtained a good win, beating Romania soundly 101-32. The best scorer was Gene Doughty with 18 points.
In the Futsal event, Malta suffered another defeat, this time going down to Spain B 8-1.
In tennis, Jean Paul Schembri and Gianni Selvagi lost to Cuerda and Prado of Spain 0-6, 0-6 while Clayton Zammit and Denzil Agius lost to Hartman and Reumer of Holland 6-0, 6-0. Earlier the same Maltese couple managed to beat Geoffrey Van Rhenen and Huib Massen of Holland 6-1 6-1, later also losing to Spain's Izquierda and Prado 3-6 1-6.
