120 To lose their job

Malta Independent Thursday, 27 July 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 20 years ago

A total of 120 Menrad Co. Ltd workers will be made redundant by mid-November.

The company, which manufactures spectacle frames, said it had decided to close down its factory in San Gwann industrial estate.

The GWU section for manufacture and small and medium enterprises said it had been informed of the company’s decision and section secretary Roberto Cristiano had called a meeting with the management.

Mr Cristiano spoke to the workers yesterday and told them that the GWU would ensure that their rights, according to the collective agreement, were safeguarded.

The company, which has German shareholders, has been operating in Malta for more than 30 years. At one point it employed 800 workers but had been forced to reduce the workforce over the past three years.
