For the first time, theatregoers will have the opportunity of seeing Samuel Becket’s “Waiting for Godot” in Maltese – “Stennija ghal-Godot”. Fabrika Fantastica Theatre Company is producing the play in collaboration with the National Lotteries Good Causes Fund. The play will be staged on De Redin Bastions in Mdina from 24 to 27 August. This venue, which has not been used for 16 years, has a wonderful 180° view of Malta and can seat nearly 500 people. Peter Busuttil returns to Maltese theatre after 10 years to direct the play, which was translated into Maltese by Joseph (Pino) Scicluna, who plays one of the title roles.
Becket was born in 1906 in Ireland and to celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth, many of his plays are being staged worldwide. En Attendant Godot (Waiting for Godot), written in 1949 and published in English in 1954, brought Beckett international fame and established him as one of the leading names of the theatre of the absurd. He originally wrote the play in French, which premiered in 1953 in Paris.
“It’s a game with words, but it is a game,” explained the director of Godot, who “doesn’t care about intention, but only about theatre”. He recommends the play not only to Maltese, but also to foreign theatregoers, as it will be an interesting experience for everybody.
The plays start at 8:30pm and tickets cost Lm7.
This fund-raising event is being held in aid of Razzett tal-Hbiberija and Puttinu Cares.
